Valley City is home to Valley City State University (VCSU) and the North Dakota Winter Show Arena. The arena hosts several events throughout the year, but is best known for its namesake the North Dakota Winter Show, a weeklong agriculture and livestock show held every March.

Guests can also take the short walk to Medicine Wheel Park, which features two solar calendars: A horizon calendar (the medicine wheel) and a meridian or noontime calendar. Other aspects of this unique 30-acre park include Native American burial mounds, a solar system model, the North Country National Scenic Trail, scenic overlooks and a 3000 square foot perennial flower garden.
